Just got your freckles done, or have an appointment coming up? Here's what happens day by day during the freckle tattoo healing process, the right aftercare for the first 24 hours, and when you can get back to makeup, working out or the sun.

Key takeaways

  • Right after, the freckles are very dark: that's normal.
  • Around day 7, they seem to almost disappear: that's normal too.
  • The first 24 hours: no water, just a thermal water spray, without rubbing.
  • Touch-up 1 month later, final color after 1 month.

Before your appointment

  • Come with clean, healthy skin, with no makeup or henna on the area.
  • No tanned skin.
  • The day before, avoid alcohol, caffeine, aspirin and ibuprofen: they thin the blood.
  • No retinol or acids on your face in the days before.
Before the appointment: clean, makeup-free skin
On the day of your appointment: clean, healthy, makeup-free skin.

The freckle tattoo healing process, day by day

PhaseWhenWhat you see
Phase 1Day 1Slight redness, and sometimes slight swelling, which goes away within a few hours (a day and a half at most). The freckles are much darker than the final result.
Phase 2Days 1 to 4A thin film or tiny scabs form. The freckles stay dark. Don't scratch.
Phase 3Days 5 to 8The scabs fall off on their own. The freckles look very light, sometimes almost invisible. That's normal.
Phase 4Days 9 to 14, up to 1 monthThe color comes back and settles, usually 30 to 50% lighter than at the start. You see the final color after 1 month.

The first 24 hours

  • 💧 No water on the area.
  • 🌫️ To clean, use a thermal water spray, without rubbing.
  • 🤍 To dry, pat with a clean towel (a fresh one each time) or a disposable tissue.

Which cream?

A simple moisturizer, with no active ingredients. And definitely no acids: acids make the pigment fade.

Never pick at the tiny scabs

They fall off on their own within a few days. Pulling them off can take the pigment with them.

The touch-up, 1 month later

The second appointment takes place a month later. It's there to correct and intensify the result, depending on how your skin healed. It's also the time to add freckles if you want more (see healed tattoo freckles, before and after).

Protecting your freckles long term

Sun, peels and acid-based products make freckles fade faster. Protect your face with SPF, and plan regular touch-ups to keep your freckles light and natural (see how long a freckle tattoo lasts).
