Just got your lips tattooed and checking them every day: swollen, then peeling, then the color seems to have vanished? Don't panic. Here's the lip blush healing process, step by step, so you know what's normal.

Key takeaways

  • Swelling goes down very quickly: about 70% in 2 hours.
  • The lips peel for 3 to 5 days.
  • Around day 5, the color seems to disappear: that's normal.
  • The final result shows after 1.5 to 2 months.

Lip blush healing stages at a glance

StageWhenWhat happens
Stage 1Days 1 to 2Right after, the lips are swollen and the color is bright. The swelling goes down very quickly: about 70% in 2 hours. In the first few days, the color darkens.
Stage 2Days 3 to 5The lips peel, for 3 days, 5 days at most. That's normal: the lip is exfoliating. Don't pull off the flakes.
Stage 3Around day 5The flakes have come off and the color seems to have disappeared. It's normal to be disappointed: the pigment is under the new skin, and it needs to come back to the surface and settle.
Stage 41.5 to 2 monthsThe color has come back and settled: that's the final result.

Right after the session: swelling

The swelling goes down very quickly. Like a soufflé: it rises fast in the oven and falls as soon as you take it out. About 2 hours after the appointment, around 70% has gone down, and the rest goes away gradually over the day. The exception: with a lot of hyaluronic acid in the lips, it takes longer to go down, up to 48 hours.

  • Thin lips swell more easily.
  • After neutralization (a longer session), the swelling can be more dramatic.
  • With a lot of hyaluronic acid in the lips, it can last up to 48 hours.
  • To head out with peace of mind, you can wear a mask: your artist can give you one.

Before, then right after the session: almost no swelling
Light swellingBefore, then right after the session: almost no swelling
Every mouth reacts differently: significant swelling on the left, almost none on the right.

Ice: yes, but never directly

You can use ice, but never in direct contact with the lip: wrap it in a clean towel or a clean plastic bag.

1.5 to 2 months: the final result

The final result shows 1.5 to 2 months after the session. That's why the touch-up isn't done earlier: you don't have the final result before then. And don't get re-pigmented somewhere else in the meantime.
