Before you take the plunge, want to see real results? Here are 10 examples of tattooed eyebrows before and after powder brows: right after the session, healed, then years later. Plus, as a bonus, how long they last and when to plan your touch-ups.
Key takeaways
- Right after, healed, after the touch-up: three photos, three different results.
- What counts is the healed result, never the photo taken on the day.
- Powder brows last 3 to 4 years on average, and their shape doesn't change.
- When you need a maintenance touch-up depends on your skin, your color and what you like.
Before you look at the photos: what to keep in mind
- There are three different photos: right after the session, healed, and after the touch-up.
- Right after, the brows are always darker and crisper. What counts is the healed result.
- Be a little wary of photos with filters, smoothing or bad lighting, and of galleries that only show photos taken on the day.

Right after the session
The brows are darker and thicker than the final result, sometimes a little red or swollen. That's normal: the color will soften.

The real result, healed
Around days 7 to 10, when the scabs fall off, the brows look very light: that's normal. Two to three weeks later, the pigment comes back up: that's the real result, softer and more natural. It varies from one client to another depending on the skin; oily skin often holds pigment less well. See eyebrow tattoo healing, day by day.

Powder brows before and after, by hair color
Sparse, uneven or almost nonexistent brows: powder brows fill them in and bring back a defined shape. The pigment color is chosen according to your skin tone and the color of your natural brows. See also eyebrow tattoo shapes and colors for your hair.

How long do powder brows last?
They fade by 80% after 3 to 4 years on average, until they disappear completely, depending on the skin. The result gets lighter little by little over time.
- Fades faster: oily skin (the intensity goes very quickly), sun, creams and skincare on the area.
- Light pigments (blondes) seem to fade faster; dark pigments (brunettes) hold up better visually.
- Makes it last: protecting your brows from the sun, following the healing instructions, not skipping the perfecting touch-up.
How powder brows age
Even years later, the shape doesn't change. The shading just gets lighter, evenly. That's why you find so many photos of powder brows healed 1 or 2 years later: the result still looks great.
Over time, the color can turn slightly cooler. At a maintenance touch-up, your artist warms it up to match your natural brows again.

Hair strokes, on the other hand, can blur over time: see powder brows vs microblading.
The perfecting touch-up: planned from the start
About 1 month after the session. It's there to intensify the brow again if the result is a little light, and/or to correct small flaws for more balance.
The maintenance touch-up: later, depending on each client
| What matters | What it changes |
|---|---|
| Oily skin | The intensity fades faster: a touch-up every year can be useful |
| Dry skin | Less need: more like after 2 to 2.5 years |
| Blonde brows | More natural pigments: often a touch-up every year to bring back intensity |
| Dark brows | Dark pigments that hold up better: less need |
| What you like | Some clients love brows that always look intense; your artist stays reasonable to keep the color from shifting |
A client who wants to come back every 6 months? It's up to the artist to be reasonable, and sometimes to say no, to avoid a color shift.
Touching up a tattoo that's several years old
- The shape: in about 90% of cases, it can't be changed. Your artist works with the existing shape. For a new shape, you have to go through tattoo removal.
- If you like your shape: a touch-up is possible, as long as the old result has faded well, ideally at least 60% gone.
- The color: if it has turned slightly cool, your artist warms it up.
- Too dark, or a strong color shift (blue, intense orange): you need tattoo removal first.
“Skin is like a glass that's already full of water: you can't add any more. When it's overloaded with pigment, you first have to empty it out.”
