Are your lips dark, brown, dull or two-toned, and would you love a lighter, more even mouth? Lip neutralization (dark lips) does exactly that. Here's how it works, the number of sessions, healing and real results.
Key takeaways
- Neutralization lightens dark lips: nude, pastel, slightly pink.
- Every dark lip is unique: send a photo of your lips to your artist.
- Usually 2 to 4 sessions, with 2 months between each one. Always plan for one more.
- Healing has some surprising stages: it's normal, don't stop halfway.
- A result that lasts much longer: often permanent.
Dark, two-toned, brown lips: what we're talking about
Lips that are darker than you'd like, brown, dull or two-toned. It's very common on olive, mixed-race and Black skin: it's not a disease, it's the lip's natural color.
Lips can also darken over the years from sun and smoking. If you're unsure whether there's a medical cause (a medication, an illness), ask a doctor.
Every dark lip is different
A dark lip can be slightly brown, dark and even, very dark and cool-toned, two-toned, or full of spots. The work is not at all the same from one lip to another:

Send a photo of your lips
Saying “I have dark lips” without a photo means nothing, and it doesn't help the professional. Before booking:
- 📸 send a photo of your lips, without makeup and in daylight;
- 🖼️ ask for healed photos if you can't find any on her social media;
- 🎨 compare yourself to lips of the same shade as yours, as much as possible.
Do you get cold sores?
If you've ever had herpes (cold sores), book an appointment with your doctor before your session: they can prescribe a preventive antiviral treatment to take before your lip tattoo.

Lip neutralization explained simply
Full lip color and ombré lips add color to light lips. Neutralization does the opposite: it lightens dark lips.
The goal: lips that go back to nude, pastel, slightly pink. Lighter, more even lips, not “candy pink”: neutralizing isn't whitening. The colors used depend on your starting lip color: your artist chooses them.

How the appointments go
1. First, neutralization. A first appointment is used to remove the dark color. For that, your artist chooses from several colors: red, yellow, white, pink and orange. She picks them based on your lips: as a client, you don't choose these colors.
The only exception: if your lips are light brown, neutralization and color can be done in the same appointment.
2. Then, the color. There isn't a big choice. Either you like your lightened lips, with their soft, very powdery pink, and you can stop there. Or you want color, and you can ask for a pink or a red.
| Step | The colors | Who chooses? |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Neutralization | Red Yellow White Pink Orange | Your artist |
| 2. Color | Powder pink (your lightened lip) Pink Red | You |
Lip neutralization or lip blush?
| Your lips | The solution |
|---|---|
| Light | Lip blush, full lip color or ombré lips to add color |
| Slightly brown (light brown) | Neutralization and color possible in the same appointment |
| Deeper brown, very dark or two-toned | Neutralization first (sometimes over several sessions), then color |
Habiba, who trains a lot of beginners, always recommends one goal per session to keep things simple: neutralize first, then add color.
The process: sessions and timing
- The number of sessions depends on the lips: the darker they are, the more sessions you need. Usually 2 to 4.
- You need to wait 2 months between two sessions: for complete healing, but above all to judge the final result and adapt the next session.
Always plan for one more session
Always count on more sessions than announced, especially for very dark lips: you avoid bad surprises and can plan your budget. It's hard to know in advance how many sessions it will take: every lip reacts in its own way, you're unique. When an artist doesn't give you an exact number, she's being honest: she's not trying to sell you more.
The lip neutralization healing process
The session is longer, so the swelling can be more dramatic than after lip blush. There are also some surprising healing stages, where the color can catch you off guard. That's completely normal: don't stop halfway. The final result shows about 2 months after each session. Details in the lip tattoo healing process.
Dark lip neutralization before and after

Lip neutralization cost
Each artist sets her own prices. Since it often takes several sessions, the total budget is usually higher than for lip blush. See our guide to lip blush cost.
A growing demand, including among men
There's a big increase in demand from men who want to neutralize dull lips, for a healthy glow without a made-up look. Demand is very strong in countries with a lot of mixed heritage, like Brazil. See our guide to lip tattoos for men.
How long it lasts and maintenance
For dark lips, it's different from other lip tattoos. To keep it simple: more concentrated pigments are used, with a strong organic base and bright colors, to counter the dark colors of the lip.
These pigments are made to last: in the vast majority of cases, the result of lip neutralization can be permanent. Of course, you can come back 3, 5 or 10 years later if you want to refresh the shade or add more color.
Important: protect your lips from the sun
Having dark skin, handling the sun really well and never getting sunburned doesn't mean you can skip this step. After a lip tattoo, sun protection isn't something to take lightly: it's a must. The sun can change the way your lips heal and keep you from getting the best final result. Apply an SPF 50 lip balm every time you go out.

Black skin: watch out for keloids
Black skin, and Asian skin too, is more prone to keloids (raised scars). If you've had them before (after a piercing, a facial injury…), a lip tattoo isn't recommended. If in doubt, ask a dermatologist.
