Permanent Makeup on Dark Skin: Eyebrows, Lips and Freckles

Habiba Med, permanent makeup trainerHabiba MedPublished on 5 min read

You have Black, dark or olive skin and you're wondering whether permanent makeup will show, turn gray or leave marks? With the right technique, the right color and an experienced artist, permanent makeup on dark skin gives a natural, clearly visible result. Here's what changes, area by area.

Key takeaways

  • Permanent makeup works on dark skin: it's a matter of technique and color.
  • Brows: powder brows are the best option.
  • Dark lips: lip neutralization (dark lips), in 2 to 4 sessions.
  • Keloids on the face: permanent makeup is not recommended.

Does permanent makeup work on dark skin?

Yes. But dark skin contains a lot of melanin, and that changes the choice of color and technique. An artist used to working on dark skin knows how the pigment will look once healed.

Understanding your skin: the two types of melanin

Eumelanin

The brown-black pigment. It's what makes skin darker: dark skin has a lot of it.

Pheomelanin

The yellow-red pigment. It brings warmer undertones.

The mix of the two, along with other factors like blood circulation, gives skin a more golden or a cooler undertone. That's what the artist looks at to choose the color.

Two dark skin tones: golden skin on the left, cooler skin on the right.

A slight gray tone is normal

On melanin-rich skin, pigment often looks a little gray over time. That's normal, and actually quite natural.

Pigments in hand: the color theory lesson teaches you to understand them
Understanding pigments means understanding why a brow turns grayish, or blue.

Grayish brows: normal

Over time, brows can turn grayish, and that's completely normal. These clients are often brunettes: brown is close to black, and black is a cool color.

Blue brows: a botched job

Blue, on the other hand, isn't normal: whoever did it used far too much black pigment. The result turns blue: this is called the Tyndall effect.

Powder brows are the best option on dark skin: the fill creates enough saturation for the brow to show clearly. Healing doesn't take longer: final result about 1 month later (more on ombre brows on Black skin).

Lips on Black skin: lip neutralization

On dark, brown, dull or two-toned lips, lip neutralization brightens the lip for a lighter, more even mouth: nude, pastel or slightly pink. It usually takes 2 to 4 sessions, 2 months apart. The result lasts much longer, often permanently (see dark lip neutralization).

Send a photo

Every dark lip is different: send a photo of your lips to your artist before booking. Always plan for one extra session.

Freckle tattoo on Black or olive skin

On golden dark skin, freckles show up really well. On very dark, cool skin, it's trickier: brown pigment on brown skin doesn't show, and very dark pigment gives a mole-like effect (see tattoo freckles on dark skin).

Precautions

Keloids

If you get keloids on your face (raised scars), permanent makeup is not recommended.

Melasma

Pigment is never applied over melasma without a dermatologist's written approval.

All the contraindications: is permanent makeup safe for you?

Choosing an artist experienced with dark skin

  • She shows healed results on skin like yours.
  • She explains the color she chose based on your skin tone.
  • She asks you about keloids and melasma.
  • She knows how to say no when it's not right for you: that's an honest artist.

For professionals: understanding skin and color theory is something you learn in training (see how to choose your permanent makeup training).
